Important: COVID Outbreak for Highwood High School

To our École Secondaire Highwood High School community,

An individual associated with Highwood High School who received a COVID-19 positive test result has now been confirmed as having a COVID-19 variant of concern (VOC).

It is important to note that this is the same case we notified you about on March 30, 2021 – NOT an additional case in relation to our school.

Foothills School Division has provided AHS with a list of all close contacts associated with this case.  Public Health will be following up with all identified individuals to provide additional information on testing recommendations and quarantine requirements.  More information on COVID-19 variants can be found at: alberta.ca/covid-19-variants.aspx

To our École Secondaire Highwood High School community,

A fifth case of COVID-19 has been diagnosed in an individual who was within Highwood High School further to the cases that were previously shared last week.  As always, our thoughts remain with these individuals and their families.  We wish them a safe and speedy recovery.

Out of respect to privacy and in accordance with AHS guidelines, we cannot disclose personal health information of any individual.  However, we are able to share that we learned of this positive COVID-19 case the morning of March 30, 2021.  We understand that the individual was last in the school on Thursday March 25, 2021.

Additional close contacts have been identified and all families affected will receive a separate email and telephone call from Foothills School Division.  Public Health will also follow up with these individuals by email following their investigation.  We would like to remind our school community that resources remain available to support you from the Calgary Rural Primary Care Network.

ALL Students within Highwood High School will temporarily transition from in-person to online learning effective tomorrow, Wednesday March 31, 2021.  We understand and respect that this may be challenging for families.  Please know that you may be eligible for federal support through the Canada Recovery Caregiving Benefit or the Canada Recovery Sickness Benefit.

We continue to consult with Alberta Health Services and Alberta Education to determine when in-person learning can resume.  At this point in time we anticipate a full return to school-based classes will occur on Monday April 12, 2021.

We strongly encourage the entire Highwood School Community to book and obtain a COVID-19 test, even if your family is experiencing no symptoms.  You can do so online through the Alberta Health Services COVID-19 self-assessment or by calling Health Link at 811.  You can reference School Outbreak number 2021-3275 for priority testing.

Thank you to everyone who has already accessed COVID-19 testing.  Your actions are allowing us to promptly identify and isolate potential close contacts.  Only by working together can we stop the spread.

A fourth case of COVID-19 has been diagnosed in an individual who was within Highwood High School further to the cases that were previously shared earlier this week.  As always, our thoughts remain with these individuals and their families.  We wish them a safe and speedy recovery.

Out of respect to privacy and in accordance with AHS guidelines, we cannot disclose personal health information of any individual.  However, we are able to share that we learned of this positive COVID-19 case the evening of March 27, 2021.  We understand that the individual was last in the school on Friday March 26, 2021.

Public Health, supported by Foothills School Division, has informed all individuals identified as being a close contact with this case.  Resources are available to support your family from the Calgary Rural Primary Care Network.

Please note:

  • ALL Grade 12 students at Highwood High School will temporarily transition from in-person to online learning beginning Monday March 29, 2021.  In-person learning will resume on Monday April 12, 2021.  We understand and respect that this may be challenging for families, please know that you may be eligible for federal support through the Canada Recovery Caregiving Benefit or the Canada Recovery Sickness Benefit.
  • A school outbreak has been declared by the Chief Medical Officer of Health. You are welcome to review the Alberta Health Services notice letter.  We have also been assigned a School Outbreak / EI Number (2021-3275), please reference this number when booking a test for faster results.
  • We strongly encourage the entire Highwood High School Community to book and obtain a COVID-19 test.  You can do so online through the Alberta Health Services COVID-19 self-assessment or by calling Health Link at 811 with the School Outbreak number 2021-3275.

We believe that these necessary actions will allow us to confidently welcome our Grade 12 students to in-person learning as soon as possible.  We truly appreciate the ongoing support of the entire Highwood High School community as we navigate these uncertain times together.

A third case of COVID-19 has been diagnosed in an individual who was within Highwood High School further to the cases that were previously shared earlier this week.  As always, our thoughts remain with these individuals and their families, we wish them a safe and speedy recovery.

To date, all three confirmed cases are in different classroom cohorts.  This news is of concern.  Please note:

A second case of COVID-19 has been diagnosed in an individual who was within Highwood High School, further to the case that was shared earlier today.  As always, our thoughts remain with these individuals and their families, we wish them a safe and speedy recovery.

Public Health, supported by Foothills School Division, continues to investigate and inform individuals who have been identified as being a close contact with this case. Please review the information provided in the notice of COVID-19 to Staff, Students and Visitors in a School Setting

This second case will mean that the Chief Medical Officer of Health will soon list our school on the COVID-19 School Status Map.  When 2 cases are identified within the school, public health officials will also initiate an investigation to monitor risk level and work within the school.  

Please rest assured that we will continue to work closely with Alberta Health Services and the Medical Officer of Health in the Calgary Zone to ensure that we follow their ongoing recommendations.  Please do not hesitate to reach out to your school principal or myself with any questions you may have.  Thank you for your continued support.

A case of COVID-19 has been diagnosed in an individual who was within École Secondaire Highwood High School.  As always, our thoughts remain with this individual and their family, we wish them a safe and speedy recovery.

Out of respect to privacy and in accordance with AHS guidelines, we cannot disclose personal health information of any individual.  However, we are able to share that we learned of this positive COVID-19 case March 24, 2021.  We understand that the individual was last in the school on Monday March 22, 2021.

Public Health, supported by Foothills School Division, continues to investigate and inform individuals who have been identified as being a close contact with this case.  Public Health will follow up with affected individuals directly by email with mandatory self-isolation orders.  Please review the information provided in the notice of COVID-19 to Staff, Students and Visitors in a School Setting

Our school remains open to in-person learning, and we are working closely with Alberta Health Services to ensure necessary measures are in place to protect all students and staff.  We continue our focus on preventing the spread of COVID-19 and have directed our custodial services team to conduct enhanced cleaning protocols of the school.  This additional cleaning will focus on areas where the individual was present along with our continuous attention to high touch areas and surfaces throughout the facility.

We remind families to monitor for any signs or symptoms of COVID-19 using the Alberta Health Daily Checklist. Please remember to complete the checklist each day prior to attending school.  If you or a member of your family has any of the symptoms of illness listed, please fill out the online Alberta Health Services COVID-19 self-assessment or call Health Link at 811.

The health and safety of our students, staff, and community is paramount. We know this news can be distressing and supports are available.  You are encouraged to visit our Parent Learning Link and Student Learning Link.
